The new year is right around the corner and most of us make resolutions for ourselves, but have you ever considered making a few resolutions for your home? Since we’re typically not great at sticking to the ones we make for ourselves, why not try making a check list for your house instead this year!
Here are few areas around the house that might need your attention and are easily resolved over the cold winter months. They’re also a lot easier than losing that 10 pounds you attempt every new year!
With all the gift giving that’s just gone on, why not clear out some of the old to make room for the new? Take on a room-by-room mission to de-clutter. When the winter weather sets in and gets particularly nasty, clean out your “junk drawer”—we all have one. Pick a night to sit in front of the fire and shred old documents that have been piling up.
Keep home safe.
Purchase and conduct a radon test. Change the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. You have carbon monoxide detectors don’t you? Clean out your dryer vent. You will not only save energy, dry your clothes faster but can also prevent a home fire.
Keep electronics safe.
Computer chips are sensitive and highly vulnerable to momentary power surges, especially powerful ones induced by lightning. Losing a $1,000 computer is bad enough, but losing photos, music and other irreplaceable stuff on your hard drive is often much worse. Insulate your valuable microprocessors from this danger by plugging them into a surge protector.
As the weather gets colder, it also gets very dry. Invest in a humidifier to put moisture back in the air. Install a programmable thermostat. It’s a great treat to save money by lowering the temperature at night while you sleep but have it adjust to warm up before your feet hit the floor the next morning. Staying warm in the winter can be expensive if your home is not properly insulated. Contact Duke Power for a free in-home energy assessment, valued at $180. The assessment is designed to help you learn how your home uses energy and how you can save on your monthly bills. Their expert will check your home for air leaks, examine your insulation levels, check your appliances and more.
Stick with your resolutions this new year and be happy, safe and warm the whole year through. Happy New Year!
